Dollar Store DIY Boys Room Wall Art

Dollar Store DIY Boys Room Wall Art
I’m in the middle of giving Lil W’s room a bit of a ”big boy” makeover.  Aside from his red race car bed, we still have all of his light blue and brown nursery decor in the room–and it just looks mismatched.  And considering he is obsessed with all things related to cars and trucks, we’ll be going in this direction for our theme.
I made this wall art using frames from the Dollar Tree.  It was super easy.
Dollar Store DIY Boys Room Wall Art ImagesSupplies:
6 4×6 plastic frames from the Dollar Tree
Spray paint
Hot glue gun (and E 600 glue)
3 sheets of colored card stock
3 sheets of white card stock
glue stick

First I removed the backing and glass from the frames. Then glue them together using hot glue. The backside will look pretty messy, but the front will be perfect.

Then I spray painted the front. I found out that in some places the plastic frames didn’t take to the spray paint that well. So I touched up the frames with acrylic paint.

While the frame was drying I used my Silhouette to cut out these cute truck shapes. Then I glued them down on six pieces of 4×6 white cardstock.

Then I put them in the frames. I left out the glass just so that it would be a little safer in Lil W’s room.

IN HINDSIGHT: The hot glue is probably not the best to use, because over time the frames will fall apart. Once the hot glue dried, I actually went over the whole frame with E 6000 glue.  Also, I think the project would be easier with wood frames–I just couldn’t pass up these cute ones for only a $1.

What Time do Your Kids Go To Bed?

Do your kids have a set bedtime? How about a bedtime routine that sets the stage for sleep? The Telegraph reports that according to Professor Tanya Byron, “we are in the midst of a “sleep deprivation crisis” that is “harming our children and young people with two million suffering sleep disorders in the UK”. Further, parents who don’t enforce an early and regular bedtime are to blame.

What time do your kids go to bed
Ouch.

As if parents didn’t have enough to worry about, now our bedtime habits are being called into question? This study is based on habits in the UK, but I wonder what the numbers would be here. What are parents in the US doing to promote healthy sleep habits? Is it a priority in your home?

I have to admit that while I don’t care for the harsh “blame the parents for the demise of society” tactics that much of this article displays, at the heart of the issue I tend to agree. Sleep is vitally important for so many reasons, not limited to the health of our children.

When my boys were infants, I had two priorities for them: nourishment and sleep. I often joke about having “good sleepers” and that is true. I think they are somewhat genetically predisposed to sleep. But their good habits did not come without sacrifice on my part. We encouraged sleep and tried to help it come as easily as possible by keeping routines in place. Missing naps was almost never an option, keeping them up past their bedtime was reserved for special occasions and vacation, and we always set the stage for sleep by singing the same song and reading a story or two before tucking them in.

Now that Oscar is 4 and he doesn’t sleep during nap time, he still appreciates the mid-day rest and will tell me he is ready to go have quiet time. Calvin will look at me and say “night night” after lunch because he knows what happens next. And if I ever felt tempted to pat myself and my husband on the back for a parenting decision, it would be now.

That said, the time change has extended the afternoons and shortened the mornings, and we have gradually been slipping into later and later bedtimes. Before we knew it, Oscar’s 7pm bedtime suddenly became 8:30 because we went outside a little longer and ate dinner a little later. Right now, we can deal with it because we only have preschool 3 days a week and it starts long after the boys wake up. But I could see sleep being an issue if he had to get up early for school or daycare like so many kids.

Not mentioned in the article is my other top reason for enforcing bedtime: quality time with my husband. Granted, we don’t spend every night gazing into each other’s eyes, but we know there will be a break from the kids each night. We have jobs and sometimes we work or read. But having a couple of evening hours to chat uninterrupted has been essential for the health of our marriage.

I agree with Byron that quality sleep is essential for our youth, but I also know that parents have busy schedules and different needs than my family. We are all doing the best we can as parents and we have different strengths and weaknesses. I share my experience not to judge, but to open up the floor for discussion.

I’d love to know your thoughts on bedtime. Do you have a set routine in your home?

Stairway Gate Installation Kit (K12) by KidCo

No Drilling
Description :
The beauty of todays homes is the diversity of designs and materials used for stairways, room openings and doorways. Because of this, the installation of child safety gates can be difficult since a one size fits all gate design does not exist.
In the Stairway Gate Installation Kit (Model K12), KidCo has assembled the materials and fasteners necessary to properly install any child safety gate to stairway banisters, without drilling into your expensive, decorative wood.

One kit is required for each side of the gate that is being mounted to a banister; and only the most basic tools are needed to assemble any good child safety gate.
For use at the top or bottom of stairs with hardware or pressure mount gates. The hardware is designed to fit square posts 2 1/2in - 3 5/8in wide or use the included insert for round post installation.

Stairway Gate Installation Kit (K12) by KidCo

This item is not to be confused with KidCo Safety Gate Installation Kit or Kidco Gate Installation Kit or The KidCo Gate Installation Kit model K10 which has hardware such as screws and plastic tie straps, but no clamps.)

I wanted to put a pressure-mounted baby safety gate at the bottom of stairs that have a banister (i.e., handrail and balusters) on one side, but I didn't want to drill holes into the newel (i.e., the thick post typically at the end of a bannister). Also, the newel was about 3" wide, which looked too large for Y Spindle for Gate Installation (2 Pack) from KidCo or Safety Innovations GM6 Baluster Mounting Kit by Safety Innovations.

This product worked great after installation on the square and round parts of the newel. The pressure-mounted gate is secure against it (and the manufacturer claims that it also works with gates that would otherwise be screwed into a wall).

However, installation took about 30 minutes, which could have been shorter if the trilingual (English, Spanish, French) instructions had been better. You can see the instructions (aka "user guide") at the Kidco Web site. It has the following problems: (1) The font is quite small. (2) It has no diagrams of the 10 types of parts (clamp fronts, clamp backs, bolts, wood blocks, shims, round post adapters, finish washers, 1-1/2" screws, 1-3/4" screws, and a 36"x1"x2" wood piece). These would have been especially helpful for people who are not mechanically inclined, or for people whose first language is not English, español, or français. (3) It does not specify what tools are needed for installation: a Phillips screwdriver (to attach the clamps to the baluster), a level (to make the 36" wood piece perpendicular to the floor), a drill with 5/32" bit (to connect the 36" wood piece to the wood blocks inside the clamps), and a saw and sandpaper (if the 36" wood piece needs to be cut shorter). (4) The pictures for Figure 2 and Figure 4 are swapped. Figure 2 is supposed to show the round post adapters and Figure 4 is supposed to show the installed gate.

So I'm giving the product 5 stars and the instructions 3 stars, for an average of 4 stars.
